F.P. Journe presents the Astronomic Souveraine, a steel watch with 18 functions and complications, entirely devoted to the contemplation of the stars.
After the success of Only Watch 2019, F.P.Journe presents the current collection version of the prototype that was offered at auction: the Astronomic Souveraine. It is a grand complication watch in steel, with tourbillon and minute repeater, whose vocation is to recall a long-forgotten gesture. That of losing oneself in the stars in order to better find one’s way on Earth.
There was a time when that poetic idea was not a paradox, but a self-evident truth. And like the instruments that were once used for the observation of the stars, the Astronomic Souveraine is above all a tool. But rather than opening a window onto the celestial vault, it celebrates Time in all its glory.
The inspiration for the project was an adolescent’s drawing, found crumpled up behind the wastepaper bin. That sketch was done fifteen years ago by François-Paul Journe’s son, Charles. Having drawn the sketch almost without thinking, on second thought the young man decided it was not appropriate. After all, he wasn’t the watchmaker in the family! And yet… On the dial, there was a curved aperture for the path of the sun.
It was a good idea. But what could be done with it? A self-winding watch? Why not? As long as there were not too many additional complications. François-Paul Journe began his research. His quest for the ideal watch took six years. And finally, it was back to the drawing board. The watch would have a manual-wind calibre that would allow more functions. It would be necessary, however, to ensure the delivery of enough energy to power all of them.
One of F.P.Journe’s earlier creations served as his inspiration: a pocket watch with planetarium made in 1987 for a collector of scientific objects. That unique tourbillon watch indicated mean time and sidereal time, as well as the equation of time, a full calendar, and the power reserve. However, there could be no question of looking backward. The future astronomic watch had to be resolutely contemporary and possess a distinctive personality. Its power would come from a double barrel. And the tourbillon with remontoir d’égalité would guarantee its perfect isochronism.
Nevertheless, the 18 carat rose Gold movement of the Astronomic Souveraine is totally novel. And it is, of course, very finely decorated. For example, the white Gold dial, whose sub-dials are embellished with clou de Paris decoration, and the moon phases, with a hyper-realistic moon that was traced from a NASA photograph. At 3h, there is the mean time (or civil time) dial, with a blue hand indicating a second time zone. At 9h, there is the sidereal time dial, which allows the observation of the stars.
Next to it, the mean time seconds are shown on a disc. Between the two are the central minutes and the power reserve indication, which remains optimal up to 40 h. Above all this is a blue aperture showing the sunrise and sunset. Here, metal shutters lengthen or shorten the days. On the reverse there is the equation of time and a full annual calendar encircled by the signs of the zodiac. It is on this side that the dance of the tourbillon may be admired.
In all, this watch, which also strikes the hours, the quarters and the minutes, possesses 18 functions and complications. It is made up of 758 components, in addition to the case. However, the case is no larger than 44 mm in diameter and 13.80 mm thick. But watch lovers will have to be patient, as only four or five pieces will be made each year.
After the success of Only Watch in 2017, F.P.Journe is proud to announce a new world record for the most expensive F.P. Journe watch ever sold at auction. The Astronomic Blue, developed specifically for Only Watch, sold for the amount of 1’807’815. – USD, in front of a packed room in which the most important collectors from all over the world have mobilized for this charity event.
The unique prototype movement, with its unique blue chrome dial and its unique case in Tantalum makes the F.P. Journe Astronomic Blue a Haute Horology major work of Art.
This grand complication watch with tourbillon and minute repeater, equation of time, sidereal time, sunrise and sunset, moon phases, 2nd timezone and annual calendar, is dedicated to recall a long forgotten gesture. That of losing oneself in the stars to better find one’s way on Earth. There was a time when that poetic idea was not a paradox, but rather an obvious truth. And like the instruments that were once used for observing the stars, the Astronomic Blue is above all a tool. But instead of opening a window onto the celestial vault, it sets the stage for all types of time.
François-Paul Journe declares: “I am happy our watch has reached such an astounding price for a charitable cause. We have all committed to allow this unique timepiece to gather such an important amount of money for the Monegasque Association against Muscular dystrophy (AMM) to support scientific and medical research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.”

In 2009, F.P. Journe opened their first Boutique in the United States in New York. To celebrate its 10th Anniversary, F.P.Journe is following the pattern set by the Tokyo, Hong Kong, Geneva, and Paris Boutiques by releasing a special Centigraphe Souverain Anniversaire. Limited to just 10 pieces, this numbered edition is engraved “New York” on the titanium case-back and available exclusively at the New York Boutique.
The Centigraphe Souverain Anniversaire is the only watch in the F.P.Journe’s Classique collection to use a polished Titanium case. The 40mm case is accented by a crown, patented chronograph rocker switch and deployant buckle in 18K 6N Gold. Further distinguishing the Centigraphe Souverain Anniversaire from the now discontinued Centigraphe Souverain is the dial, now in Ruthenium with Gold printing and sapphire subdials with open centers, exposing the solid 18K rose Gold movement.
The Centigraphe Souverain, winner of the 2008 “Aiguille d’Or” at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie in Geneva, measures the passage of time from 10 minutes down to 1/100 of a second. The left subdial makes one revolution per second, the right 20 seconds, and the bottom 10 minutes – each designed to measure the passage of 1 kilometer from a rocket ship, a racing car, down to walking pace.
The first of two patents unique to the Centigraphe is for the rocker switch located at 2 o’clock to start, stop and reset the chronograph, designed so the user can engage all the functions of the chronograph in one position. The second is the ingenious mechanism that isolates the chronograph from the timekeeping function of the watch, allowing the balance to maintain its amplitude unaffected when the chronograph is engaged.
The Centigraphe Souverain Anniversaire contributes to the medical research of the ICM
In purchasing the Centigraphe, you are also supporting the medical research carried out by the ICM – Institute of Brain and Spinal cord in Paris – to help find a cure for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis.
Along with Professor Gérard Saillant, Luc Besson, Michelle Yeoh, Jean Réno, Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher, amongst others, François-Paul Journe has committed to donating 30% of the profits from the sale of each Centigraphe to the ICM, with no time limit (www.icm-institute.org).
After the launch of the Centigraphe Titanium and Automatique Réserve Titanium with yellow dials last fall, the Centigraphe and the Automatique Réserve are now available in their Platinum and 18K 6N Gold versions. The 44mm cases are available in Platinum or 18K 6N Gold with an assorted respective metal bracelet with matte finishing emphasizing a contemporary sportive aspect.
The bezel with ceramic inlay follows the codes of the Chronographe Rattrapante with numbers engraved in the Platinum or Gold base. The dials of the 18K 6N Gold versions are in Silver guilloche covered with Ruthenium and appliques numerals in matte 18K 6N Gold and Silver guilloche chronograph or small second counters. The Platinum versions feature blue-mauve colour Silver guilloche dials with appliques numerals in matte white Gold and Silver guilloche chronograph or small second counters.
The 18K rose Gold hand-wound mechanical movement of the Centigraphe indicates elapsed times on three dials, a 100th of a second at 10 o’clock, 20 seconds at 2 o’clock and 10 minutes at 6 o’clock. The chronograph is started, stopped and zeroed by a patented ® rocker at 2 o’clock instead of the usual buttons on either side of the crown. The Centigraphe supports the medical research carried out by the ICM, Institute of Brain and Spinal Cord in Paris. Along with Professor Gérard Saillant, Luc Besson, Jean Réno, Michelle Yeoh and Jean Todt, amongst others, François-Paul Journe has committed to donating 30% of the profits from the sale of each Centigraphe to the ICM, with no time limit (www.icm-institute.org).
The Automatique Réserve features a day and night indication and a date now even larger (4.7 x 2.6 mm) for optimal readability. The 18K rose Gold automatic winding mechanical movement with a 22K Gold rotor uses any slightest movement of the wrist to increase the winding of the watch providing 160 hours of power reserve.
The Centigraphe Souverain and the Octa Automatique Réserve are now part of the retrospective collections that are no longer in production.
The Centigraphe and the Automatique Réserve in Platinum or 18K 6N Gold are now available in the 9 F.P.Journe Boutiques around the world.
