The Rolex China Sea Race is the oldest blue water classic in Asia. First held in 1962 and partnered by Rolex since 2008, it follows a 565-nautical mile (1,046 kilometre) course from Hong Kong to the Philippines. This year marks the 30th edition of the biannual offshore race, organized by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. While most competing yachts are Asian-based, sailors from around the world are enticed by the race’s elevated standing as well as its stringent examination of skill and underlying Corinthian spirit and traditions. Starting in Victoria Harbour, where one of the world’s most distinct skylines provides a dramatic backdrop, the fleet then embarks on the long passage through the South China Sea to Subic Bay. Variable conditions present a test of sailing prowess. Of the two main prizes, the most coveted is the Rolex China Sea Race Trophy for overall victory under IRC time correction, while the first boat to finish receives the Sunday Telegraph Trophy.
