HYT and RC44: The Celebration of a Decade

There are not many pairings as perfect as HYT’s hydro mechanical watch and the famous RC44 sailboat, co-designed by Russell Coutts. And with the 10-year anniversary of the RC44 Championship Tour this year, HYT decided to make it a special one.

Both the RC44 Series and HYT began their stories 10 years ago, working independently over the years to forge new paths and new models using new technologies. The H4 RC44 pays homage to the two successful ventures and the pioneering philosophy they both live by.

HYT has released a new H4 RC44 in honour of the occasion, after being partners with the event since its inception in 2006. From that date, the championship tour was recognised by the International Sailing Federation, and is known as one of the most difficult, but friendliest, events of its kind.

The luxury Swiss watchmaker has offered its new design to Coutts as a tribute to the endurance and comradery spirit of the event. The new H4 RC44 unites all maritime codes in one race, with its case emulating the monohull. This includes blue liquid, technical design, the same colour codes of the regatta, and an ultra-light carbon case, which is modelled off of the RC44’s hull. In this spectacular design, you will also see a one-off seconds wheel that matches the golden bar that is raised on the famous monohull when it is winning.

This attractive timepiece is in skeletonised mode, with a transparent sapphire disc displays the minutes with a black minute hand in the centre. The power reserve indicator is divided into four segments and displays the 65 hours of autonomy. It is hosted by a dial at 2pm. A translucent capillary travels around the exterior of the watch with a deep blue liquid. This is an exciting first for the H4 collection, and represents the stunning blue of the sea in the race. A luminescent coating of SuperLumiNova® under the capillary ensures the H4 RC44 is highly visible at night. It shines brightly in the dark and indicates the hour’s path.

The entire piece is beautifully and intricately designed, much like the HC44 that it emulates. The carbon case in grey anthracite tones matches the bezel that displays the titanium DLC insignia at 6pm, which is a characteristic of HYT. The crown is made of the same DLC and sheathed in rubber with a screw down mechanism to ensure its 50-metre waterproof reliability.

The strap is made of NOMEX, which is a high-performance synthetic fibre, designed for extreme weather conditions. This tough material can often be found in sailing hulls because of its ability to form protective resistant honeycomb structures.
